Suttons' turbo-charged new veggies

SUTTONS HAS added two new veg to its rapidly increasing Turbo Grafted Vegetables range. The Devon-based firm is encouraging gardeners to trial grafted squash ‘Hunter’ and grafted water melon ‘Ingrid’.

Veg in the Turbo line-up are grafted on to extremely vigorous root stocks, a process that has been successfully used by commercial growers for many years. Suttons claims the result is larger, more vigorous plants with greater resistance to pests and disease and less susceptibility to nutritional disorders. Varieties are claimed to perform well with less heat in greenhouses and yield crops earlier and over a longer growing period.

Squash ‘Hunter’ is an early-ripening butternut variety. Squashes are ready for harvesting through late summer into autumn and feature attractive orange flesh. Water melon ‘Ingrid’ can be grown in a greenhouse or outdoor frame. It yields fruits weighing 2-3kg which are described as having “sweet and juicy, nearly seedless red flesh”.

Both newcomers cost £9.95 for three grafted pot-ready plants and will be delivered in early May. To order call & (0844) 922 0606 or visit 8 suttons.co.uk for more details.
