MacPennys nursery itself was bought around 1934 by Mr. Douglas Lowndes from a lady who grew drought resistant plants and sold them in small pots for one penny each. Her name was Marcia Ashley-Corbett, hence the name MacPennys.

A real nursery, lots of rare and more ordinary plants, grown by very helpful people with real knowledge of what they are selling. Well worth a trip, their woodland walk is a delight especially when all the azaleas and rhododendrons are in flower. Highly recommended.

Macpenny's, a nursery rather than a garden centre was a welcome and exciting discovery. In an informal setting on the edge of the New Forest, many unusual and rare plants, shrubs and trees can be found. Most of them can also be seen growing in the wooded garden. The quality of the plants themselves is excellent, and the prices very reasonable. If you are into acid-loving plants try the compost made from New Forest bracken: it goes down a treat! The staff are very helpful and know a great deal about what they offer for sale, something which is often lacking elsewhere. You can also do most of your research on the excellent website.
