My friend and I visited this garden centre last Friday to have lunch, a natter and, if we could afford it, buy some plants. Firstly, the main cafe was closed for refurbishment. We only discovered this when we'd walked all the way to the cafe door. We were directed to the Garden Cafe. What an experience! It was dirty, the young staff were surly and uncommunicative and to cap it all, we had to eat old jacket potatoes that had obviously been reheated with plastic cutlery off paper plates for £5!! Tea out of paper cups does not taste the same! We've since been told that the cups and cutlery had to be disposable because the dishwasher was unavailable. Have they heard of rubber gloves and Fairy? Horrible experience.

This afternoon while on a day’s holiday from work, I took a trip to the Van Hage’s Garden Centre in Ware and experienced some truly poor customer service. After purchasing a handful of pot plants staff refused to let me take the plastic basket out of the store to make it easier for me to carry my plants to the car. I explained that I would return the basket but the basket was simply taken away. No one offered to assist, no one questioned why, I was simply told that this was against company policy and I wasn’t allowed to take the basket out of the store. Quite a surprise considering every other occasion that I’ve shopped there I have done just that.
Even though I returned my goods for a refund and even though I spoke to the manager about my experience. I left Van Hage’s today feeling almost humiliated as the same staff stood at the till, gawking at me as I left. It’s up to you where you spend your hard earned cash, I'll never shop there again!
