7 Quick BBQ Tips!

It’s probably the British climate that makes everyone want to rush outside and enjoy a BBQ with family and friends when the sun shines, but where exactly should you put your BBQ in your garden? How do you create a really attractive area for your outdoor entertaining?

  • Stay close to your kitchen - whether you spend a few pounds on a disposable BBQ, or go for a larger one because you enjoy outdoor cooking and entertaining, it is always a good idea to place it somewhere near your kitchen. Having it close to your kitchen will allow you to get to your fridge and sink easily and quickly.

  • Flooring – the area where you place your BBQ must be level of course, and it should have an appropriate base too. Steer clear of flooring such as marble or tiles, since both of these become slippery when wet or when grease and food are spilled on them. Your existing patio is quite acceptable if you are planning on buying a small, portable BBQ.
  • Take safety precautions into consideration – wherever you place your BBQ should not be a fire hazard to the vegetation in your garden, your home, or any outbuildings you might have on your property. It is also a good idea to avoid placing it under power lines, close to low-hanging trees, or against walls that are flammable.

  • Wind direction – check the wind direction in your garden, and make sure that you position your BBQ in such a way that the wind doesn’t blow any smoke over your guests or inside your home.
  • Provide shelter – you might want to provide some sort of shelter for your guests from rain and sun if your BBQ is situated in partial shade or direct sunlight.
  • Lighting – some strategically-placed night-time lighting is essential if you are planning on entertaining around your BBQ at night.
  • Make your BBQ functional – whether large or small, you will still need four functional areas around your BBQ, including a preparation area, an area where you cook, a place to dish up and an area to serve the meal. Plan these areas carefully, making sure that they allow you to move freely at all times, even when you have plenty of guests in your garden.
