Plant of the week: Bamboo

Bamboos are actually grasses with woody stems providing attractive, lush foliage that can be used to add a tropical effect, or a block a view for any garden. They come in all shapes and sizes, most are fully hardy and evergreen and can be grown anywhere in the UK. There are two main types available:

Clumping Bamboo - A well behaved bamboo that forms a nice clump without taking over the garden.

Running or Spreading Bamboo - Often the smaller bamboos that send out roots in many directions and can quickly grow. When planting these bamboos it is recommended that gardeners create a barrier to contain the spread of the roots.

Bamboo requires a fertile, moisture retentive soil that doesn’t get waterlogged. Will grow well in most soils including clay. Plant bamboo in full sun to part shade, away from strong winds.
