The specific influence of the Moon’s phases and constellations on plants

Lisa Garden on 26-06-2026

Observations of the Moon’s influence on plant growth and development have been utilised in agriculture and horticulture for centuries. Changes in the phases of the Moon and its position in the constellations are linked to fluctuations in gravitational force and levels of night-time light, which can affect sap flow in plants, soil moisture and root system activity.

The influence of the Moon’s phases

The Moon’s phases reflect cyclical changes in natural rhythms and are traditionally used as a guide when planning work with plants.

The waxing Moon is associated with an active flow of moisture and nutrients from the roots to the above-ground parts of the plant. During this period, the growth of shoots and leaves intensifies, which is why it is considered favourable for sowing and planting crops whose yield develops above ground. It is also a suitable time for watering, fertilising and other stimulating procedures. The full moon is considered the peak of activity. At this time, plants are sensitive to mechanical damage, so intensive work on the root system and pruning are not recommended. The full moon is often used for harvesting fruit, berries, seeds and medicinal plants, as well as for inspecting the condition of the garden.

During the waning moon phase, sap flows towards the root system. This period is traditionally considered favourable for planting root crops, transplanting plants, pruning and shaping the crown. Tilling the soil at this time helps to strengthen the roots and increase the plants’ resistance to adverse conditions.

Taking the phases of the Moon into account does not replace standard agricultural practices, but can serve as an additional tool for more precise and careful plant care.

The influence of the zodiac signs

In lunar calendars for plants, it is not only the phase of the Moon that plays an important role, but also its position in the zodiac signs.

The zodiac signs are usually divided into four elements:

  1. Water.

  2. Earth.

  3. Air.

  4. Fire.

Each element is associated with a specific type of plant activity. It is important to bear this in mind when choosing a particular seedling or seed, so that they can be planted at the right time, at the appropriate temperature, and so on.

Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

These signs are traditionally considered the most favourable for most gardening tasks. During this period, plants absorb moisture more easily and develop their leaves and shoots more actively.

Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

These are associated with stability and the strengthening of the root system. The Moon’s position in these signs is considered favourable for planting and transplanting plants, tilling the soil, and rooting cuttings and seedlings.

Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

These periods are characterised by a moderate influence. They are more commonly used for caring for the above-ground parts of plants: pruning, staking, thinning out, as well as for ornamental plants and flowers.

Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

These periods are considered the least favourable for sowing and transplanting. They are associated with drought and increased stress on plants.

Practical advice for 2026

In 2026, the lunar calendar can be used as a tool for more precise planning of gardening and agricultural work. It helps to spread the workload and choose periods when plants tolerate intervention better, but it should not be regarded as the sole guide.

In particular, it is advisable to take the region’s climatic conditions into account. Even the most favourable days according to the lunar calendar will not yield results under unfavourable weather conditions or on soil that is too wet or cold. It is therefore best to combine the lunar recommendations with the actual condition of the soil and the temperature conditions.
