Three simple steps to bigger sweet peas

Get the most from this garden favourite with three simple tricks from Kris

1 Two weeks after planting out, choose the strongest stem and tie it to a support using twine or a wire/plastic ring. Remove all other shoots. As the main shoot grows, regularly tie it in to the support

2 Remove all tendrils and sideshoots except the one immediately below the growing tip, just in case the leader is damaged by birds or bad weather. Do this regularly as you notice new sideshoots and tendrils appear.

3 Remove any early flowers to conserve energy for larger blooms later in the year. Soil should be well prepared ahead of planting, but for an added boost, liquid feed plants as the main crop of buds develops.
