Plant of the week: Trees and Hedging

November is traditionally the start of planting season for trees and hedging. With deciduous trees and shrubs going into their dormant period, bare-root woody plants are now being lifted and wrapped at the nursery ready for dispatch. Because the soil is still relatively warm, bare-root plants will settle into the soil quickly and get off to a fast start, next spring.

An ideal project to consider before winter really sets in is planting a hedge. Remember to use some bone-meal to encourage root growth. Most good garden centres will stock a range of hedging plants right now for a limited period and you will find bare-rooted plants to be a lot cheaper than plants grown individually in pots.
