Decking the Halls

Nothing is quite as evocative of the festive season than the fragrance of spruce and pinecones.  Bringing foliage into the house has a long tradition right back to the pagan festival of Yule when bringing in the foliage was thought to ward off evil spirits. Only as recently as 1835 did Christmas trees become a main stay decoratation.  As well as a tree, wonderful garlands can be created using a mixture of coniferous evergreens and winter foliage such as Pittosporum, variegated Box, and Viburnum not to mention interest twigs such as Contorted Hazel, Corkia and Birch.

There really is a multitude of good evergreen material that can be grown in the garden, picked and used to create simple stunning natural displays.  Hedera ‘Paddy’s Pride’ with its large glossy variegated green leaves with a golden centre look stunning combined with short spikes of Juniper, shards of tree bark, dried Hydrangea heads, Skimmia and winter flowering Prunus.  Combined together as a festive table decoration a candle in the centre will add a simple touch of sparkle.
