Hillier Garden Centre Winchester is a very individual garden centre in the heart of the historic city. Located on a site purchased by Edwin Hillier in 1874, today the bustling, contemporary centre offers a great range of quality plants, including locally grown varieties from Hillier Nurseries in Hampshire.

I have used Hilliers at Winchester on many an occasion as a resident here and although quite pricey have usually found what I came for and members of the ground staff can be very helpful and knowledgeable. At the checkout an assistant was called over to assist as customers were waiting, unfortunately her demeanour was such that I hoped I would checkout at the opposite point which I did, but I could not help noticing the no welcome, no smile and indifferent manner she greeted the customers. Now who knows what may be happening in this assistants world, serious or otherwise but this manner would put me off from shopping there. The sun was shining, Spring not far away but I felt rather grumpy on leaving the store.

There is a large car park to the side but the charge is either £4 or free if you spend £5. The pedestrian safe walk-way was blocked with trolleys. Inside the store was cluttered and very difficult to manoeuvre a push-chair. Aisles were blocked with empty trolleys and we often had to double back. The cafe was dreadful. The entrance door was by the counter so there was a clash between people coming and going and those queing. There are 3 separate eating areas with two in conservatories. We had coffee. By the time we left there were 5 or 6 uncleared tables and available clean table. We never saw any attempt to remove trays etc and this was around 11.30 just before the lunchtime rush? Not recommened.
